Monitoring of inertial elements and gas in volcanic sites
Under the measure 18.104.22.168 “Funding for research, development and innovation” (PO FESR Sicilia 2007/2013). P.M.F. is coordinating a project in collaboration with the Department of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering ‐ University of Catania and the INGV ‐ National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.
The major environmental issues that concern Sicily are the risk of geological instability of the area and the volcanic and seismic risk. The project titled “Volcan Guard ‐ Monitoring of inertial elements and gas in volcanic sites” aims to develop a network of low cost sensors to take over the variation of some inertial elements and gas concentration. The purpose of this monitoring network of sensors is to provide not only accurate estimates of observed variables (light, temperature, vibration) but also a qualitative indication of how these parameters are changing. The innovative nature of the project lies in the capacity of this tool to develop prompt information on the phenomenon measured and provide extremely useful information about the event necessary to generate states of alert.
